American Okinawan Karate Academy
The original design of the American Okinawan Academy school patch was based on the submission of ideas from Master Barnes's original students in the Sierra Vista area. The students submitted their designs based on their understanding of Master Barnes' teachings and his explanation of his vision of Isshin-Shorin-Go Ryu. Master Barnes consolidated the ideas into the current A.O.K.A. patch.
The three stars on the top of the patch represent the three styles that served as the basis for Isshin-Shorin-Go Ryu style: Isshin Ryu, Shorin Ryu and Goyu Ryu. The Tori "gate" symbolizes the gateway or entrance into the way of life of the martial artist. Secondly, the Tori was included in the design of the patch to remember the Tori that stood in front of the main Isshin Ryu Dojo in Okinawa. this of course was included to honor Grand Master Shimabuku Tatsuo, the founder of Isshin Ryu. The "Flaming Sai" is Master Barnes' personal symbol. The flame represents the purification of the mind, body and spirit of the dedicated students of Isshin-Shorin-Go Ryu. the white background of the patch also represents the purity of the true martial artist. The gold trim that borders the patch represents the pure, never ending bond that exists between the Master and his students.
The primary styles that contributed to the development of Isshin-Shorin-Go Ryu/Tai Shin Ki Do are Isshin Ryu, Shorin Ryu, Goyo Ryu, Shaolin Gung Fu, Keijutsukai Aikido, Chi Kung and Jujitsu.
